It's a glorified customer service job with an underwriter title. The pay is better than most customer service rep jobs; however, the job is draining because most agents and their staff who call us are incompetent. They either haven't been trained properly or are too lazy to find answers for themselves.

They refuse to search for answers that are right in front of their face. A lot of calls end up being handholding sessions for incompetent agents and staff.

This ends up being a lot of grunt work for contact center "Underwriters". If you love being a customer service rep then this is the job for you. If you are looking for a real underwriting position, then look elsewhere. Was this review helpful? Yes There are 1 helpful reviews 1 No. Report Share. We're on the phones all day in a call center environment. They tell you how often you can go to the bathroom, if you're there too long, your adherence is judged and questioned if you're able to do your job. They watch how long you're on the phone as if you can read the minds of the callers and determine off the back what they need help with and can finish EVERY CALL within 5 minutes. No other company wants you because they are aware State Farm underwriting training is horrendous.

Management is full of it. They say they want to help you but don't. I've mentioned on several occasions that I was interested in other opportunities within my field and my manager gave these opportunities to others instead. You work hard just to get looked over. No work life balance in underwriting, way too much red tape, morale is low, people are swamped and are waiting to get a package or looking for other jobs.

New management has ruined what used to be a good place to work. No on boarding plan, no real direction, bad systems, too much pressure and management has no idea what underwriters need to be successful. Pros Good coworkers, benefits are decent. Cons Long hours, tedious processes, low morale.
